SK Hynix, flush with cash, faces spending‑allocation challenges yet still lacks sufficient funds to construct a US‑based Solidigm fab.
The firm delivered another blockbuster Q3 2026 quarter, with revenue surging 328 % year‑on‑year to ₩104 trillion ($78.9 billion), crossing the ₩100‑trillion threshold for the first time. Net income rose 216 % to ₩39.8 trillion (around $30 billion). It posted an 80‑percent operating margin and holds a net‑cash position of ₩98.7 trillion ($74 billion), leaving it virtually debt‑free.
CEO Kwak Noh‑Jung outlined the rationale for shelving Solidigm’s planned IPO. “The IPO aimed to secure external capital for Solidigm capacity expansion, easing our investment load and expanding scope for shareholder returns,” Kwak explained. “After weighing current financial‑market conditions and other variables, we determined moving forward now would fail to deliver original expected outcomes. We have therefore ended related evaluations.”

SK Hynix remains upbeat over AI‑driven product tailwinds, forecasting a virtuous cycle: AI‑fueled productivity improvements and new revenue across software development, customer service and search accelerate AI adoption, spurring further infrastructure investment. It expects steady expansion for the global AI datacenter infrastructure market.
Near‑term memory‑market growth will be powered by enterprise and personal AI; mid‑to‑long‑term demand will come from physical‑AI use‑cases including autonomous vehicles and robotics.
HBM4 is transitioning into SK Hynix’s mainstream offering this quarter and is projected to surpass HBM3E in both shipment volume and revenue next quarter. Fourteen long‑term supply agreements (LTAs) cover over half its 2027‑2028 memory capacity. Management anticipates memory demand will outpace supply through 2030.

DDR5 server‑DRAM sales expanded sharply alongside SOCAMM‑form‑factor LPDDR5 targeting AI servers. Sales of TLC SSDs built upon its 321‑layer NAND have grown, while the vendor continues development of its high‑bandwidth‑flash technology.
Its key capital‑spending priorities are as follows:
Return most proceeds from its Kioxia equity gain to shareholders via ₩100 trillion ($75.4 billion) in distributions this year. This one‑off gain helps satisfy investors without constraining reinvestment of booming profits into expanded HBM, DRAM and NAND output.
Boost DRAM capacity by lifting the share of its 10nm‑class sixth‑generation (1c) process; run the M15X fab at full output by year‑end to scale HBM4 manufacturing.
Push 321‑layer NAND to exceed half of domestic production capacity in Q4, raising supply of high‑performance, high‑capacity eSSDs.
The Yongin Phase 1 facility will ramp to full‑scale operations in 2027 to lift overall output.
Total manufacturing investment is set to rise substantially as domestic and overseas infrastructure projects gather momentum.
“Technological competitiveness has earned customer confidence and long‑term contracts, shifting our business toward more stable earnings with clearer mid‑and‑long‑term demand visibility,” CEO Kwak commented. “We will extend our HBM leadership into next‑generation products and raise shareholder payouts as business and investment results improve.”
Funding a US‑location fab for Solidigm remains unresolved. While SK Hynix holds massive cash reserves, roughly an additional $30 billion will still be required.
